Newton Tors
The Newton Tors stand at the western edge of the Great Moor, a stretch of open land that stretches from Wooler to the Cheviot Hills. These rock outcrops overlook the College Valley and include three main peaks: Easter Tor, Wester Tor and Hare Law. The highest point reaches 537 metres, making it a Dewey, a category for hills between 500 and 600 metres. The landscape is shaped by ancient geological forces, leaving these free-standing masses as striking landmarks. The Tors are a popular destination for walkers, with several routes leading to the summits. The most common approach starts from Kirknewton, Old Yeavering or within the College Valley itself. Walkers often follow part of St Cuthbert’s Way before reaching the steep climb between Yeavering Bell and Easter Tor. Descents lead to the valley floor at Southernknowe or towards Commonburn House and Wooler. The paths vary in difficulty, offering options for different levels of experience. The higher slopes are covered in thick peat and managed for grouse shooting. Heather burning is carried out to encourage red grouse populations, though attempts have been made to introduce black grouse. Feral goats also roam the area, adding to the wild character of the landscape. The views from the Tors stretch across the moor and down into the College Valley, revealing a quiet, rugged beauty. The contrast between the rocky summits and the softer valley below makes the walk memorable.
