Magiovinium

Magiovinium was a Roman fort and settlement along Watling Street in what is now Buckinghamshire. Its original earthworks covered about 2.2 hectares, protected by double ditches, and it operated roughly from the reign of Nero to that of Domitian. A civilian settlement grew beside it, stretching along the road and lasting until the 4th century. The fort’s oval defences measured about 350 metres from north-west to south-east and 250 metres across the other axis. Archaeologists have found traces of its ramparts and ditches 500 metres south of today’s Fenny Stratford. The site lies close to the modern town, marking a key point on the old Roman road. Visitors can walk the line of the ancient ditches and ramparts, now grassed over. The surrounding area is quiet farmland and suburban streets, yet the buried remains still shape the landscape. The Watling Street alignment is clear where the modern road follows the Roman route.
