River Shiel

The River Shiel is a short river in the Scottish Highlands, running four kilometres between Moidart and Ardnamurchan. It starts at Acharacle, where Loch Shiel ends on its western side, and flows northwest to Dorlin. There it empties into Loch Moidart after a gentle descent through quiet glens. Salmon and sea trout travel up the Shiel, and resident brown trout reach weights of up to six pounds. The water remains clear and cool, drawing anglers to its banks. The river’s small size keeps it unspoilt and little known beyond local fishing circles. Visitors find a quiet waterway winding through birch and oak woods. The banks are lined with ferns and mosses, and herons stand motionless in the shallows. At dusk, otters slip between the pools, and the only sounds are water over stones and the cry of a distant eagle.
