Ben Stack

Ben Stack stands in the heart of Sutherland, a 721-metre peak in the far northwest of Scotland. It rises above the A838 road between Laxford Bridge and Loch More, close to Loch Stack on its western side. The mountain’s slopes are gentle enough for a moderately easy walk, making it a popular choice for hikers. Two main routes lead to the top: one follows the long eastern ridge from the southeast, while the other starts near Lochstack Lodge on the northwestern side. Both paths begin beside the A838, allowing walkers to link them in a single traverse. The mountain is best known for its accessibility rather than its height. Its rounded summit offers wide views across the surrounding moorland and lochs. The paths are well-trodden but quiet, giving a sense of solitude even on clear days. The climb is short enough to be completed in a few hours, yet the views reward the effort. The terrain is mostly grass and heather, with no technical scrambling required. From the top, the landscape stretches away in all directions. Loch Stack lies to the west, its waters reflecting the sky. To the east, the ridge of Leathad na Stioma leads the eye toward distant hills. The air is often still at the summit, broken only by the call of curlews or the rustle of wind through the grass. The route down follows the same paths, returning walkers to the roadside where their journey began.
