St Mary's Church, Little Ilford

St Mary’s Church stands in Little Ilford, a quiet corner of east London’s Newham borough. The building sits on Church Road between St Winefride’s Avenue and Rectory Road, sharing its grounds with the old St Mary’s Rectory. Most of the church dates from the 12th century, though the chancel was rebuilt in the 18th century. A south porch and a family chapel for the Lethieullier family were added in 1724. After serving as the parish church for centuries, it became a chapel of ease to St Michael’s in Manor Park in 1938. The church is recognised as a Grade I listed building, placing it among England’s most significant historic sites. Its long history is reflected in the surviving medieval fabric and later Georgian additions. The Lethieullier chapel still holds memorials to the family who once owned nearby Valentines Mansion. The chancel’s 18th-century rebuild shows how the church adapted over time while keeping its original purpose. Inside, the nave and chancel reveal layers of construction from different centuries. The south porch and family chapel add space and ornamentation to the plain medieval core. The churchyard contains old gravestones that mark generations of local people. Outside, the setting remains calm despite the busy roads nearby. The building’s Grade I status confirms its national importance as a place of worship and history.
