River Gwili

The River Gwili rises in Brechfa Forest east of Llanllawddog in Carmarthenshire. It flows west through Llanpumsaint then turns south-east past Bronwydd to meet the River Towy at Abergwili. The river shares its name with several villages and Glangwili General Hospital. The Gwili Railway follows part of the old Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line along the valley. A section near Bronwydd reopened in 1978 as a heritage railway. Visitors can ride restored carriages pulled by steam or diesel locomotives. The line runs beside the river for much of its route. The valley around the river is quiet farmland with scattered woods. The river itself is shallow and fast-flowing, lined by rushes and willows. Walkers can follow the old railway path beside the water. The Gwili Railway station at Bronwydd sits close to the riverbank.
