Barr Castle

Barr Castle stands as a late medieval tower house in ruins on a low ridge south of Lochwinnoch village in Renfrewshire. Built in the 15th or early 16th century, it passed to the Hamiltons of Ferguslie in the late 16th century. The Hamiltons kept the castle until the late 18th century before selling it and moving to a new mansion. The castle is protected as a scheduled monument. Its simple rectangular plan measures about 7.80 metres by 10.70 metres, with walls standing to about 12 metres high. The castle’s plain exterior hides its historical importance and architectural details. The only remaining ornamental feature is the pediment above the main entrance, inscribed with the initials of Margaret Hamilton and John Wallace. Window openings survive on all four sides, and traces of later alterations from the late 17th century are visible. The ground floor was divided into two apartments with low vaulted ceilings, and the first floor hall had a flat, low ceiling unlike most Scottish castles. Inscriptions carved into the fabric include initials of Hamilton lairds, John Wallace, and his wife Margaret Hamilton. Visitors find a roofless stone tower with remnants of its past grandeur. The main entrance on the west side is a later addition; the original doorway was on the first floor, reached by a stairway. The hall on the first floor is lit by windows on all sides, and the second and third floors were divided into apartments with garderobes. The battlements show an old arrangement of overlapping stones and gargoyles, with stairs leading to the top. The castle’s inscriptions, including dates like 1680 and 1699, tell the story of the Hamilton and Wallace families. Surrounding the castle are the remains of subsidiary buildings that once formed a courtyard.
