Reitbrook
Reitbrook is a small quarter in Hamburg’s borough of Bergedorf, set beside the Dove Elbe river. It borders four other quarters—Kirchwerder, Ochsenwerder, Neuengamme and Allermöhe—forming a quiet corner of the city. The area is known for its low population, with only 522 residents recorded in 2020. Its main landmark is a traditional windmill that has stood here for generations. The mill once belonged to the family of Alfred Lichtwark, a Hamburg art historian born in 1852. His father managed the mill before him, linking the place to local history. The windmill is the only attraction that draws visitors to Reitbrook. It remains a working example of 19th-century milling technology. The mill’s sails still turn when the wind is strong enough, grinding grain as it did in Lichtwark’s time. The surrounding fields and riverbanks add to the rural feel of the quarter. There are no busy streets or large buildings, just open land and a few scattered homes. The contrast with central Hamburg is striking. A walk through Reitbrook leads past the windmill and along quiet lanes lined with old farmhouses. The Dove Elbe flows nearby, its waters reflecting the sky and the mill’s silhouette. Visitors can see how the quarter has kept its agricultural character despite being part of a major city. The absence of modern distractions makes it a place to experience calm and simplicity. Few places in Hamburg offer such a clear view of the past.
