Scrabo Tower

Scrabo Tower stands on Scrabo Hill near Newtownards in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is a 19th-century lookout tower built as a memorial to Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. The tower rises 41 metres above the surrounding landscape and provides wide views across the area. It was originally known as the Londonderry Monument and was designed in the Scottish Baronial Revival style. The hill itself holds a prehistoric hill fort beneath the tower’s foundations. The tower is worth the journey because it commemorates a figure from the Napoleonic Wars who later became Marquess of Londonderry. Funds for its construction came from 730 subscribers, including Napoleon III of France. The design competition initially favoured an obelisk, but the final tower was built by Lanyon & Lynn in a simplified form. The tower’s height was reduced during construction, and its cost rose from £2000 to £3010. It stands as a symbol of landlord power rather than gratitude from tenants. Visitors find a tall stone tower with an unfinished interior and a caretaker’s flat inside. The tower dominates the skyline and offers long-distance views over Newtownards and beyond. The surrounding hilltop is bare, allowing the tower to be seen from far away. A tearoom once operated inside, run by the McKay family who lived there as caretakers. The tower’s stark design and imposing presence make it a striking landmark in the landscape.
