Buckingham Baptist Chapel

Buckingham Baptist Chapel stands in Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol. It is a Gothic Revival church built in 1842 to designs by Richard Shackleton Pope. The chapel is one of the earliest Baptist buildings in this style. It describes itself as an independent evangelical Baptist church. The chapel left the Baptist Union in 1972 because of disagreements over doctrinal clarity. Since December 2015 it has been led by Pastor Oliver Gross. The chapel is recognised for its outreach work in Bristol. It runs Sunday services, a midweek prayer and Bible study meeting, and monthly prayer meetings. Weekly groups include Sunday school, Tiger Tots for parents and toddlers, and Lighthouse for teenagers. The chapel also hosts a young adults group on Saturday evenings. Annual events include a church party, missionary Sunday, and a Bonfire Night celebration. Inside, the chapel retains its Gothic Revival character. The building has been Grade II listed by English Heritage. The interior reflects the 19th-century design chosen by Pope. The space is used for worship, study, and community activities. The chapel’s outreach extends to Romanian and Roma communities. Its programmes support families, young people, and spiritual growth.
