Schüttkasten Frauenkirchen

The Schüttkasten Frauenkirchen is a four-storey granary in Frauenkirchen, a town in Burgenland near the Neusiedl am See district. Built in 1766, it bears the Esterházy family crest above its entrance. The 17-window façade rises from a vaulted ground floor to a similarly vaulted attic, with wooden beam ceilings in between. This granary once stored crops for the Esterházy estates across the region. Its sturdy design reflects the agricultural wealth of the 18th century. The building’s scale—four full storeys and a long symmetrical front—shows how important grain storage was to the local economy. Inside, visitors find high vaulted ceilings on the lower levels and exposed wooden beams above. The thick walls and narrow windows were made to keep grain cool and dry. Outside, the granary stands at Raiffeisenplatz 1, a quiet square in the town centre, marking the historic heart of Frauenkirchen.
