The University of Southampton stands on a seven-campus network across the city. The Highfield campus forms the largest and oldest part, set among playing fields and mature trees near Southampton Common. Avenue Campus houses the School of Humanities in a modern block beside the Avenue. Boldrewood Campus brings engineering and maritime technology together beside the docks, while the National Oceanography Centre sits on the waterfront with research ships alongside. The university is one of the UK’s leading research institutions and the biggest by student numbers in the South East. It was the first British university licensed to open a campus in India in 2024. Research income reached £141.4 million in a single year, funding work in ocean and earth sciences. The Students’ Union runs 200 societies and 80 sports clubs, supported by a large sports ground and centre. The original Hartley bequest of £103,000 in 1862 still shapes the institution’s scientific mission. Visitors walk through Highfield’s broad avenues lined with lecture halls and libraries. The Hartley Library holds collections built from private donations and public subscription. Highfield Hall, once a country house, now serves as a female-only hall of residence. Glen Eyre’s red-brick courts and Montefiore’s modern blocks provide student housing across landscaped lawns. The dockside National Oceanography Centre displays marine exhibits and working vessels to the public.
