Windmill Tower At Mill Nurseries

Keyingham New Mill stands in the village of Keyingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is a five-storey circular tower built of colourwashed brick with a low-pitched hexagonal tile roof. The mill was constructed around 1828 as a corn mill and operated until about 1900. In 1897 lightning struck the tower, peeling half the paint and fusing the chain. After standing empty for decades, it was converted into a house around 1980 with a substantial extension added. The building received Grade II listed status in 1987. The mill’s conversion preserved its historic character while adapting it for modern use. The original circular tapering tower remains intact, with doorways and windows featuring segmental heads. The interior was reorganised into living spaces during the 1980s renovation. The Grade II listing recognises its architectural and historical significance in the region. Its survival reflects changes in agricultural practice and rural industry over two centuries. Visitors see a sturdy brick tower rising above the surrounding village rooftops. The hexagonal tiled roof and segmental-headed openings give the structure a distinctive appearance. Inside, the converted floors reveal a blend of original mill features and later domestic alterations. The Grade II listing plaque near the entrance confirms its protected status. The mill remains a quiet landmark in a small Yorkshire village.
