Brownsea Island

Brownsea Island lies in Poole Harbour off the Dorset coast. It is the largest of eight islands in the shallow harbour, measuring about two and a half kilometres long and one and a quarter wide. The National Trust owns most of the island, while the northern half is managed as a nature reserve by Dorset Wildlife Trust. Woodland, heath and salt-marsh cover the land, with cliff-top paths offering views across the water to the Purbeck hills. A small wharf and dock sit near the main castle at the northern landing stage. Most buildings cluster around this point, while the southern tip holds Brownsea Castle, leased as a holiday hotel. The island’s history includes a 1907 scout camp that led to the worldwide Scouting movement. Early records show monks from Cerne Abbey built a chapel here in the 9th century. In 1547 Henry VIII fortified the island with a blockhouse that became Brownsea Castle. Later owners added gardens, trees and even a failed porcelain works in the 19th century. Traces remain of the pottery ruins, clay tramway and the ruined village of Maryland. Inside St Mary’s church, built in the Gothic style, flags of Scouts and Girl Guides hang beside Waugh’s tomb. Visitors find red squirrels living among the pine and oak woods, one of the few places in southern England where they survive. A brackish lagoon attracts terns in summer and over fifteen hundred avocets in winter. The nature reserve shelters herons, egrets and sika deer, with fenced areas protecting young woodland. Salt-marsh and reedbeds line the shores, while two freshwater lakes lie inland. Peacocks wander the grounds and Mediterranean snails live on old stonework. Paths wind through heathland to cliff edges, giving wide views over the harbour and distant hills.
