Port of Liverpool

The Port of Liverpool stretches along the River Mersey from Brunswick Dock in Liverpool to Seaforth Dock in Seaforth, including the Birkenhead Docks on the opposite bank. It covers a seven-mile stretch of interconnected granite-lined docks built to handle ships day and night, isolated from the river’s tides. The system began in 1715 with the Old Dock, the world’s first enclosed commercial dock, and grew into the most advanced port of its time. By the 19th century it had become the heart of the British Empire’s transatlantic trade, home to shipping lines such as White Star and Cunard. Some of the greatest ships ever built, including the Titanic and Lusitania, sailed from these docks. The port handled millions of tonnes of freight in the 20th century and remains one of the UK’s largest, now moving containers, grain and cruise traffic. Seaforth Dock opened in 1972 to take the biggest container ships of its day, while Liverpool2 expanded capacity in 2016 for Post-Panamax vessels. The cruise terminal at the Pier Head, rebuilt in 2008, lets ships berth at any tide and has welcomed liners like Queen Mary 2 and Royal Navy vessels. Behind the working docks, some historic branches have been filled to make way for housing, commercial estates and a sewage works. Visitors can walk along the surviving dock walls and see the granite quays built from Scottish stone. The Liverpool Marina in Coburg Dock offers 340 berths for smaller vessels, while the Dock Road still carries the echoes of steam ferries and lorries from the port’s busiest years. From the riverbank the skyline shows cranes, towers and the constant movement of ships, a reminder of the port’s role in global trade. The docks form a landscape neither fully land nor sea, where human effort meets the endless flow of water and cargo.
