St John the Evangelist's Church, Perry Barr

St John the Evangelist’s Church stands in the Perry Barr district of Birmingham. The Grade II listed building was designed by Robert Studholme, a stonemason from Sutton Coldfield. Construction began in 1831 and the church was consecrated in 1833 by the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. It originally had a single aisle nave, side vestries and a bell tower. The church later expanded with a chancel, organ chamber and vestries added in 1888 by J.A. Chatwin. Two transepts were added in the 1880s, giving the interior a more spacious feel. The church is recognised for its stained glass windows by Hardman & Co., Pearce & Cutler and Camm. The tower’s clock dates from 1838. The current bells, originally cast in 1776, were installed in 1972 after being moved from St John’s, Deritend. They were recast by Taylor’s of Loughborough and had previously hung in Bishop Latimer Memorial Church, Handsworth. The church follows the liberal Catholic tradition within the Church of England. Inside, visitors find a two-manual pipe organ and a spacious interior shaped by the 19th-century additions. The stained glass windows depict religious scenes, adding colour and detail to the nave and transepts. The tower’s clock and the recast bells add to the church’s character. The building remains a place of worship and a local landmark in Perry Barr.
