Farncombe Wood

Farncombe Wood is a small nature reserve in Farncombe, a district of Godalming in Surrey. It covers just one hectare on a steep slope, owned and managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The wood was donated to the trust in 2003. Most of the trees are hazel coppice with scattered oak standards. Bluebells, wood anemone, yellow archangel and pignut grow among the ground flora. The site is worth visiting for its quiet woodland atmosphere and spring wildflowers. Bluebells carpet the woodland floor in April and May. Wood anemones and yellow archangels add colour earlier in the season. Pignut, a low-growing umbellifer, appears in clearings and along paths. The steep paths and varied light create a changing scene through the year. Visitors reach the wood by walking along Huxley Close in Farncombe. The footpath continues straight ahead when the road turns right. A sharp left turn leads down a steep path to the wood. Keeping to the left keeps walkers on the main route through the reserve. The woodland offers glimpses of Surrey’s native flora in a compact, accessible space.
