St Peter's Italian Church

St Peter’s Italian Church stands on Clerkenwell Road in the London Borough of Camden, squeezed between tall buildings yet holding its own. Built in the mid-19th century for London’s growing Italian community, it was designed by Irish architect Sir John Miller-Bryson to resemble Rome’s Basilica San Crisogono. The church was consecrated in 1863 as ‘The Church of St Peter of all Nations’ and remains the only basilica-style church in the UK. Its grand bell, cast in Sheffield in 1862, weighs about 87 cwt and was once one of the largest in England. The church also houses a historic organ built in 1886 by the Belgian firm Anneesens. The church’s façade features twin arches and a bell tower rising 33 metres, topped by a statue of Christ flanked by figures of St Bede and St George. Inside the loggia are two memorials: one for Italian veterans of the First World War and another for 446 Italians lost on the SS Arandora Star in 1940. The interior, though less grand than originally planned, still impresses with its spacious nave and high ceiling. It was designated a Grade II listed building in recognition of its architectural and cultural significance. The church has long served as the spiritual and social heart of Clerkenwell’s ‘Little Italy’. Visitors find a calm interior with a large central aisle leading to the altar, framed by simple yet striking decorations. The mosaics above the entrance depict biblical scenes, while the great bell, nicknamed ‘The Steel Monster’, hangs in the tower. The church remains a place of worship and community gathering, especially during the annual July procession. Its walls carry the memory of generations of Italian immigrants who shaped its history. The building’s modest exterior belies the warmth and significance found within.
