Christ Church, Toxteth Park

Christ Church stands in Linnet Lane in the Toxteth district of Liverpool. It is an active Anglican parish church designed in Decorated Gothic style by the firm of Culshaw and Sumners. The building is made of stone with slate roofs and includes a six-bay nave, north and south aisles, a canted chancel, and a north tower topped by a broach spire. The tower features angle buttresses and louvred bell openings with angel corbels. At the west end is a five-light window with Geometric tracery, while the clerestory windows are lunettes with pointed arches. The church is worth visiting for its fine Gothic architecture and historic stained glass. The interior has slender quatrefoil piers with foliage-carved capitals and a hammerbeam roof in the nave. The sanctuary floor and reredos date from 1930 and were designed by Bernard Miller. The stained glass includes work by Hardman in the apse and early 20th-century windows by Gustave Hiller and Shrigley and Hunt. The original pipe organ was built by C. and J. Whiteley, later replaced by an organ from Willis. Visitors find a peaceful church interior with carved stonework, a hammerbeam roof, and colourful stained glass. The tower offers views over the surrounding area from its broach spire. The church remains active in worship and community life, holding Sunday services and informal gatherings. It also runs a community pantry and subscribes to an inclusive statement of belief. The building is recognised as a Grade II listed structure on the National Heritage List for England.
