Hodbarrow Point Lighthouse

Hodbarrow Point Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of Hodbarrow Point, a low rocky headland on the Cumbrian coast near Millom. The lighthouse marks the entrance to the Duddon estuary, where the River Duddon meets the Irish Sea. Hodbarrow Point is part of the Hodbarrow Nature Reserve, a lowland raised mire and coastal habitat managed by the RSPB. The reserve covers about 200 hectares and supports a wide range of wetland birds, including lapwing, snipe and curlew. The lighthouse itself is a small white-painted tower with a lantern room and gallery. It was built in the 19th century to guide ships past the shifting sands and shallow waters of the estuary. The lighthouse is worth the journey for its quiet beauty and wildlife. The Hodbarrow Nature Reserve is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rare plants and invertebrates. The reserve’s pools and reedbeds attract migrating birds, and the raised mire supports cotton grass and sphagnum moss. The lighthouse stands on the edge of this landscape, offering views across the estuary to Black Combe and the Lake District fells. The area has a long industrial past, with iron mines and a seawall built to protect the mines from the sea. The Hodbarrow Outer Barrier, completed in 1905, still shapes the coastline today. Visitors to Hodbarrow Point find a peaceful coastal walk with views of the lighthouse and the estuary. The reserve has a network of paths and boardwalks that lead through wetland and woodland. The lighthouse is reached by a short path from the reserve car park near the Hodbarrow Lagoon. The lagoon itself is a former iron ore pit, now filled with water and home to waterfowl. From the point, visitors can see the Duddon Sands at low tide and the distant hills of Furness. The reserve is a place for birdwatching, photography and quiet reflection, far from the busier parts of the Lake District.
