Holy Trinity Church, Coverham

Holy Trinity Church stands in the quiet village of Coverham, North Yorkshire, beside the remains of Coverham Abbey and close to the River Cover. Built mainly in the 13th century, it has a nave, south aisle, chancel and a 15th-century west tower. The church is made of stone rubble with slate roofs and has a simple rectangular plan. The church is Grade II* listed and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Its oldest parts date from the 13th century, with later additions in the 14th and 15th centuries. Restorations took place in the 19th century before it became redundant in 1985. It appeared in the television series All Creatures Great and Small in 1978 and 1985. Inside, pointed arches rest on octagonal columns without bases or capitals. Victorian encaustic tiles cover the floor, and medieval painted glass shields survive in the south aisle windows. Three bells hang in the tower, the oldest cast in 1632. The east window in the chancel is in Perpendicular style, while the west tower shows crocketted finials and an embattled parapet.
