University of Derby

The University of Derby stands in Derby, a city in the East Midlands of England. Its main campus sits on Kedleston Road in the north-west of Derby, close to the A38 and opposite Markeaton Park. A modern building for arts, design and media opened on Markeaton Street in 2007. Courses also run at Britannia Mill in Derby and at One Friar Gate Square in the city centre. Derby Theatre in the centre delivers theatre arts courses. The university owns the Devonshire Dome in Buxton and a site in Chesterfield converted from a former grammar school. The university began in 1851 as the Derby Diocesan Institution for training schoolmistresses. It became Derby College before gaining university status in 1992. The university now offers more than 300 undergraduate programmes and covers most academic disciplines. It has around 34,000 students across all areas of study. The university merged with High Peak College in Buxton in 1998 and with Leek College in 2012. In 2022 it opened the Nuclear Skills Academy with Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd to train 200 new apprentices over ten years. Visitors to the main campus find modern lecture theatres and a student union building. A bus service links the campuses and nearby areas. Sports facilities include indoor and outdoor options, and cafes and food outlets serve students and staff. The university library provides resources and support. Derby Theatre hosts public performances alongside teaching spaces. The Devonshire Dome in Buxton offers further education courses and a distinctive venue. The Chesterfield site continues the university’s presence in the North-East of Derbyshire.
