Burg Binzelberg

Burg Binzelberg was a lowland castle near Usingen in the Hochtaunuskreis of Hesse. It stood on a gentle southern slope of the Galgenkopf hill, just 280 metres above sea level. The site lies beside a small pond where the Schlichenbach stream bends north-west. Today only earthworks mark the spot where the castle once stood. The Galgenkopf itself rises only 23 metres higher than the ruins. The castle was abandoned centuries ago and no walls or towers remain. Historians know of the castle mainly from a 1971 study by Jost Kloft. His work on the territorial history of the Usingen district records the site in detail. The castle appears in the Hessian historical gazetteer as a deserted medieval settlement. No visible stonework survives above ground. The earthworks show where the outer ditch once ran. The pond beside the site is still visible today. Visitors walk a quiet country lane to reach the spot. A small information board explains what once stood there. The Galgenkopf hill offers wide views over the surrounding countryside. The stream and pond add a peaceful setting. The landscape feels rural and undisturbed. Only the earthworks hint at the castle’s former presence. The place invites a short stop to imagine the medieval fortress.
