Stumpfer Turm Morbach
The Stumpfer Turm stands on a ridge in the Idarwald range, part of the Hunsrück hills in western Germany. It sits about 560 metres above sea level, separated from the main ridge by the Dhron valley. The tower overlooks the Mosel valley to the northwest and the heights of the Hunsrück to the southeast. Nearby is the village of Hinzerath, a district of Morbach in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district. A short drive away lies the Belginum Archaeological Park, marking the route of the Roman Ausonius road. Built around 1315 by Archbishop Balduin of Trier, the tower formed part of a border defence system with Burg Baldenau. Its six-metre diameter and ten-metre height gave guards a wide view across the surrounding countryside. Made of local slate, the tower was designed as a watch post rather than a stronghold. Today the ruin shows a clear gap in its wall, and the interior cannot be entered. The structure remains an example of early 14th-century military architecture. Visitors can walk around the base of the tower at any time. The surrounding woodland offers quiet paths through the Idarwald, with distant views of the Mosel valley. The nearby Archaeological Park displays finds from the Roman period along the Ausonius road. The tower’s position on the ridge makes it a landmark for walkers on the Hunsrückhöhenstraße. A local legend tells of two brothers whose rivalry shaped the tower’s unusual shape.
