Redbridge tube station

Redbridge is a London Underground station on Eastern Avenue in the Redbridge district of Ilford, East London. It stands on the Hainault Loop of the Central line between Wanstead and Gants Hill stations, in London fare zone 4. The station opened in December 1947 as part of the Central line’s extension east from Liverpool Street. Its name comes from a small red brick bridge over the nearby River Roding, marked on maps as early as the 17th century. The building was designed by Charles Holden, a noted architect who also designed the other two deep-level stations on this branch. During the Second World War the completed tunnels were used by Plessey as an aircraft parts factory. The station is worth the journey for its architecture and history. Holden’s design gives it a simple, solid look with clean lines and a brick façade. In 2011 English Heritage granted it Grade II listed status, recognising its special interest. The shallow depth of 5.2 metres below ground is unusual for a deep-level station, though the running lines drop into genuine tube tunnels at each end. The name changed twice before opening, first planned as “West Ilford,” then “Red House,” before settling on “Redbridge.” The nearby roundabout at the junction of the A406 and A12 marks the station’s place in London’s road network. Visitors find a quiet station with platforms reached by stairs and lifts. The ticket hall and passageways show Holden’s careful use of brick and glass, typical of his work on the Underground. Outside, the busy roundabout and bus routes 66, 145 and 366 make it easy to reach. The station’s modest scale and functional design reflect the practical aims of 1930s transport planning. Its listing means the building is protected, preserving a piece of London’s transport heritage for future generations.
