Florence Court

Florence Court is an 18th-century house and estate in County Fermanagh, eight miles south-west of Enniskillen. Set in the foothills of Cuilcagh Mountain, it stands near the village of Florencecourt. The house was built in phases by the Cole family, starting with John Cole in the early 1700s. Its design shows influences from architects like Richard Cassels and Davis Ducart. The estate includes colonnades, pavilions, and landscaped gardens. It was the home of the Earls of Enniskillen until 1973. In 1955, a fire damaged the upper floors, but restoration brought much of its former grandeur back. The house is recognised for its fine Irish furniture and exquisite Rococo decoration. Many original furnishings were returned after being loaned to other Irish houses. The library and study feature baroque plasterwork, while the dining room and drawing room display rich rococo styles. The Venetian room and colonnades add to the estate’s architectural interest. The Florence Court Yew, discovered in 1767, is the ancestor of nearly all Irish Yews worldwide. Its survival makes it a botanical landmark. Visitors explore landscaped gardens with panoramic views of Benaughlin and Cuilcagh mountains. The pleasure garden includes Victorian specimen trees and rhododendron displays. The reconstructed summer house offers views over the garden and Benaughlin. The four-acre walled garden contains a rose garden, orchards, and a restored Rose Cottage. Nearby, the Lady Well is a natural spring well. The estate’s parkland, laid out in the 18th century, adds to its scenic beauty.
