St Tyfei's Church, Llandyfeisant

St Tyfi’s Church stands near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, on the edge of the Dinefwr Park estate. It is a small stone building dedicated to the Welsh saint Tyfei, nephew of Saint Teilo. The church first appears in records from 1291 and was linked to Talley Abbey by 1324. Parts of the present structure date from the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. The church was almost entirely rebuilt in the second half of the nineteenth century by architect R. Kyrke Pearson. The building has Grade II listing for its architectural interest and exceptional setting. The last Lord Dinefwr is buried in the churchyard, along with many servants from the estate. In 1961 the font and stained-glass war memorial were moved to St Teilo Church for safekeeping. The Welsh Wildlife Trust once used the church as a visitor information centre in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Negotiations for its restoration have taken place in 2011 and again from 2018. Inside, the church has an open arched-brace roof with collar-beams and stone corbels. A thirteenth-century window survives in the south wall from an earlier building. The burial ground slopes steeply and holds many old headstones. The church is no longer used for worship and is cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches.
