Buckland

Buckland lies just outside Dover in Kent, a village now largely merged with the town. The landscape is gentle, with open fields and quiet lanes leading down to the valley. A small stream runs through the valley, adding to the rural feel. Buckland Valley once held an important Anglo-Saxon cemetery, discovered in the 19th century. Many of the finds now belong to the British Museum but are displayed at Dover Museum nearby. The village is chiefly known for its Anglo-Saxon past and for Edward Betts, a railway contractor born here in the 19th century. In 1891 the parish counted 4,344 people before it was abolished and joined to Dover five years later. Despite the merger, Buckland keeps its separate identity through place names and local memory. The old cemetery site remains a quiet reminder of the village’s early history. Visitors find a peaceful place with wide views over the valley and towards Dover. The lanes are lined with weathered cottages and farm buildings from past centuries. A short walk leads to the valley floor where the stream still flows. The museum in Dover holds the Anglo-Saxon treasures found here, linking the village to its ancient roots. Edward Betts’ birthplace adds a touch of railway history to the scene.
