St John the Evangelist's Church

St John the Evangelist’s Church stands in Vanbrugh Park, Blackheath, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Built in the 1850s by Arthur Ashpitel, it was designed to serve a growing high-class residential area. The church is an Evangelical Anglican parish with two Sunday services and thriving children’s and youth groups. It occupies a prominent island site surrounded by roads and housing, making it a clear landmark in the streetscape. The building is constructed from Kentish ragstone with a Welsh slate roof and features a tall spire with decorative tracery. The tower includes clock faces and a stair turret, reflecting its Perpendicular Gothic Revival style. The church’s history includes wartime damage to stained glass, later replaced, and a 1999 reordering that introduced offices and a kitchen at the west end. It was listed at Grade II in 1973 for its national importance and special interest. Outside, a war memorial designed by J.B.L. Tolhurst and unveiled in 1922 was separately listed in 2016. The interior retains fittings from the late 19th century, including a rood screen and reredos by H.S. Rogers. Stained-glass windows were designed by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, adding to the church’s architectural character. Visitors find a nave with aisles, an aisled chancel, and a vestry with an organ chamber. The west-end gallery, once installed by D. Drury, was removed during the 1999 changes. The church’s position on an island site ensures it remains a focal point in the area. Its architectural style blends Perpendicular and Decorated Gothic Revival elements, reflecting the Evangelical movement’s preferences. The surrounding streetscape and housing enhance its visibility as a local landmark.
