Granville Theatre

The Granville Theatre stands in Victoria Parade, Ramsgate, on the Kent coast. It is the town’s only multi-purpose entertainment venue, built after the old Granville Pavilion was destroyed in the Second World War. The new building reused every usable brick from the ruined pavilion, with new blocks made locally. Designed by architect W. Garwood, it cost £13,100 to construct. The theatre opened on 21 June 1947, officiated by the Mayor, Alderman S. E. Austin. The theatre has long been a cultural hub in Ramsgate. During its early years, it was supported by the actress Brenda Blethyn as its patron. After closing in March 2020 due to the pandemic, it reopened in May 2023 under new ownership by Westwood One Ltd. Today it seats 600 and hosts live music, touring productions, comedians and pantomimes. Recent shows include a staged pantomime of *Aladdin*. Inside, visitors find a 600-seater auditorium and an on-site café called bar Coast. Improved toilet facilities and a bar enhance the experience. The theatre remains Thanet’s sole venue of its kind, offering a programme of entertainment for the community.
