Fishguard Bay

Fishguard Bay lies on the north Pembrokeshire coast, opening into Cardigan Bay. Its coastline forms part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, though the towns of Fishguard and Goodwick stand just outside. The bay stretches from Dinas Island to Crincoed Point, a distance of about five kilometres. Rugged cliffs and rocky shores dominate most of the shoreline, with smaller sandy coves appearing here and there. Fishguard Harbour sits in the southwest, sheltered by a long breakwater that curves out into the bay. Ferries leave regularly from Fishguard Harbour for Rosslare Harbour in Ireland. The harbour also hosts the Fishguard Lifeboat Station and the Fishguard Bay Yacht Club, founded in 1947. The yacht club offers sailing, rowing, kayaking and paddle-boarding, while boat trips explore the bay and nearby waters. A holiday park on the bay’s edge takes its name from the bay itself. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs along the bay, dipping inland briefly on the western side. Visitors find sweeping views over Cardigan Bay from the cliffs and headlands. Tiny coves and pebble beaches appear along the shore, with Pwllgwaelod’s small sandy bay at the eastern end. The breakwater walk gives a close view of the ferry terminal and lifeboat station. Sailing and water sports take place in the harbour, watched by the yacht club’s members. The National Park boundary keeps much of the coast wild and quiet, while the towns nearby provide shops and places to eat.
