Mullwharchar

Mullwharchar is a hill in the Dungeon Hills, part of the Galloway Hills range in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. It stands north of Loch Enoch, west of Corserine, northeast of Merrick and east of Kirriereoch Hill. The summit is fairly flat and scattered with erratic boulders. Three cliffs—The Slock, The Tauchers and The Organ Pipes—rise on its slopes, and some routes on these are climbed occasionally. The mountain’s open summit offers wide views across the surrounding hills. In 1978 a plan was made to drill test boreholes on Mullwharchar for nuclear waste disposal. Kyle and Carrick District Council refused the application after strong local opposition. A petition with 100,000 signatures was sent to the Queen to support the rejection. The developer’s appeal cost £19,700 but did not proceed. The episode remains a notable moment in the hill’s history. Visitors reach the summit along rough paths that climb through heather and grass. The flat top allows easy walking among scattered stones and small pools. The cliffs add dramatic edges to the landscape. From the summit, Loch Enoch and the surrounding hills form a sweeping horizon. The air is clear and quiet, with few other people on the open ground.
