Wesley Church And Attached Library

Wesley Methodist Church stands in central Cambridge beside Christ’s Pieces, a small green space near the university. Built in 1913, it replaced an earlier chapel from 1849 that once stood on Hobson Street. The present building follows Gothic Revival design, with tall windows and pointed arches. A William Hill organ from 1844 was reinstalled during a major refurbishment in 1990. The church belongs to the Cambridge Methodist Circuit and shares the city with one other Methodist congregation in Castle Street. The church remains an active place of worship with daily prayer and several Sunday services. It hosts the Cambridge Student Methodist Society, which meets in the Upper Room each week. Wesley House theological college and The Leys School maintain close ties with the church. Social events and community activities take place regularly in the building. The organ continues to be used for concerts and recitals. Inside, the nave opens to a wide space with clear Gothic lines. The organ loft sits above the main entrance, its pipes rising toward the vaulted ceiling. The Upper Room is a simple space used for smaller meetings and study. Large windows let in daylight that falls on the stonework. Outside, the church overlooks Christ’s Pieces, a quiet garden where students and townspeople walk.
