Gants Hill tube station

Gants Hill is a London Underground station in the residential Gants Hill district of Ilford, east London. It lies on the Hainault loop of the Central line between Redbridge and Newbury Park stations, and is the easternmost station below ground on the network. The station sits in London fare zone 4 beneath Gants Hill roundabout, reached by pedestrian subways. It opened on 14 December 1947 as part of the Central line’s new Hainault loop extension. The station’s ticket hall sits directly under the roundabout, with low structures above providing daylight and ventilation. Architect Charles Holden designed its barrel-vaulted halls at platform level, inspired by Moscow Metro stations he had studied. Unlike most stations, Gants Hill has no surface buildings, only subways leading down to the concourse. Three escalators descend to the vaulted lower concourse between the two platform tunnels. Miniature roundels appear on platform tiles alongside roundel clocks. Trains run every three to four minutes during the day, serving Hainault and Ealing Broadway via Newbury Park. The station connects to local bus routes including the 66, 123 and 179, and night routes N8 and SL2. Nearby landmarks include Valentines Park, Valentines High School and Faces nightclub. The station’s distinctive architecture has drawn public support for listing despite not being Grade II protected.
