St Luke's Church, Upper Broughton

St Luke’s Church stands in the quiet village of Upper Broughton in the East Midlands. Built in the 12th century, the church is a Grade I listed building and serves a joint parish with two other churches of the same dedication. It was restored in 1855 by the architect S. S. Teulon, who left his mark on its structure. The church is set in a small village surrounded by open countryside. Its stone walls and simple design reflect the craftsmanship of the medieval period. Its Grade I listing recognises its national importance as an example of medieval church architecture. The 1855 restoration by Teulon preserved much of the original character while updating the interior. Inside, visitors can see memorials dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These include a tablet for John Brett from 1788 and one for his wife Elizabeth in 1823, signed by Pratt of Nottingham. The church also houses an organ listed in the National Pipe Organ Register. Inside, the visitor finds a plain but dignified nave with a chancel beyond. The restored roof and windows show Teulon’s careful work. The memorials on the walls are simple but finely carved. A modest organ occupies a corner of the church, its pipes rising above the pews. Outside, the churchyard holds weathered gravestones and a peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding village offers few distractions, allowing the church to stand as a quiet witness to centuries of local life.
