The Retreat

The Retreat stands on Lamel Hill in York, a quiet place set among fields and gardens. It began in 1796 as a small house for people with mental health needs, built by Quakers who wanted kindness instead of chains. The first residents numbered only three, rising slowly to eight, all treated as neighbours rather than inmates. The buildings were designed to feel like a home, with separate bedrooms for men and women and windows disguised to avoid the look of confinement. Gardens stretched around the house, planted with flowers and stocked with rabbits and poultry so residents could walk among gentle animals. The Retreat became famous for its ‘moral treatment’, a new way of caring that relied on conversation, work and trust rather than fear. William Tuke, a tea merchant, led the project after seeing cruelty in the York Asylum where Hannah Mills had died. He worked with his physician Timothy Maud and the architect John Bevans to create a calm environment. George Jepson, the first superintendent, and the nurse Katherine Allen showed that patience and kindness could calm troubled minds. Their approach spread worldwide, inspiring places such as the Friends Hospital in Philadelphia. Visitors today find a peaceful hospital where the early spirit is still recognised. The original house and its gardens remain, though larger modern wards have been added. A sunken wall once used to keep patients safe is now part of the landscape, almost hidden by grass. The burial ground of the York Friends Meeting House lies within the grounds, linking the present to the founders. A Quaker chaplain works here, and half the trustees come from the local Quaker meeting. The Retreat continues to offer care shaped by the same ideals of respect and individual attention that began more than two centuries ago.
