Burgstall Schlössle
The Burgstall Schlössle is a vanished hilltop fortification standing on a wooded ridge 590 metres above sea level. It overlooks the road to Michelfeld, about one kilometre south-west of Aufhausen, a district of Bopfingen in the Ostalbkreis. The site lies within a forest called the Schlössle, where only earthworks and a few stones remain. Archaeologists believe the small medieval castle was built in the High Middle Ages, though no written records survive. In 1896 visitors could still see sections of wall, and a report described an upper chamber 35 metres long and 20 metres wide, separated from the plateau by a rock-cut ditch. The ditch is still visible today, forming a right-angled enclosure around the vanished walls. It measures between ten and twelve metres across and drops seven and a half metres into the rock. The only clue to the castle’s purpose is its strategic position on a hilltop, giving wide views over the surrounding countryside. Günter Schmitt, in his guide to Swabian castles, calls the site a modest but intriguing example of a small medieval fort. The lack of documents makes it impossible to name any lord or event connected with the place. A walk through the forest brings visitors to the grassy hollow where the castle once stood. The deep, angular ditch frames the flat interior, hinting at the vanished walls. Moss covers the remaining stones, blending them into the woodland floor. The site offers quiet glimpses of the medieval landscape rather than grand ruins. From the ridge there are long views across the valley towards Bopfingen and the Alb plateau. The forest keeps the atmosphere calm and undisturbed, making it easy to imagine the castle’s vanished life.
