Church of St Michael

St Michael & All Angels’ Church stands in the small village of Winwick in Northamptonshire. It is an Anglican parish church with a Grade II* listing. A church may have existed here as early as 1086, when the Domesday Book mentions a priest in Winwick. The present building’s main parts were raised in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1853 the chancel was rebuilt to designs by E F Law. The church follows a cross-shaped plan topped by a west tower. The church holds special interest for its long history and surviving records. Parish registers begin in 1567, and the older volumes are kept at Northamptonshire Record Office. Winwick belongs to a united benefice that also includes Long Buckby, Watford and West Haddon. Each village keeps its own church building while sharing clergy and services. Inside, the cruciform layout guides visitors through nave, transepts and chancel. The tower rises above the west end, giving the interior a lofty feel. The 1853 chancel adds Victorian detail to the older stonework. The registers and fabric together tell centuries of local life.
