Theater Hof

The Theatre of Hof stands in the Upper Franconian town of Hof on the River Saale. It is a multi-genre house covering opera, drama, ballet and youth theatre, and also serves as the main venue for the Hof Symphony Orchestra. The building occupies a quiet corner of the town centre, surrounded by cafés and shops. Its history began in 1822 when the first municipal theatre opened in a converted Franciscan church. That early playhouse was demolished in 1902, making way for later development. The theatre’s significance lies in its resilience and artistic ambition. After the Second World War, local leaders formed a public association to keep professional theatre alive in the region. In 1948 the newly founded Städtebundtheater Hof opened with Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The first season’s drama production, Carl Zuckmayer’s Des Teufels General, drew 17,500 spectators, a record that still stands. The house quickly gained a reputation for staging contemporary and challenging works, including the Bavarian premières of Sartre’s Dirty Hands and Hofmannsthal’s The Great Theatre of the World. Inside, the auditorium seats around eight hundred and retains warm wood panelling from its 1929 renovation. The stage houses a full orchestra pit and modern fly-tower for large productions. The foyer displays posters of past performances alongside programmes from the 1950s. Outside, the theatre fronts a small square where audiences gather before performances. Behind the building, a landscaped courtyard offers a quiet place to reflect after the show.
