Cerkev sv. Duha, Sveti Duh (Občina Škofja Loka)

The Parish Church of St Spirit stands in the village of Sveti Duh, part of the Municipality of Škofja Loka. First mentioned in written records in 1423, it was rebuilt in 1860 from a Gothic church with a wooden ceiling into a Baroque structure. The Gothic presbytery walls were kept, along with fragments of the original wall paintings. These include images of Christ with chalice and host, Saints Paul, Peter, James, Thaddeus and Andrew, dated 1456. The rest of the interior painting dates from the 19th century and is by Janez Gosar. The high altar has a wooden superstructure from 1652. The church was last remodelled between 1991 and 1992 following plans by architect France Kvaternik. The two side altars date from 1861. The organ was built in 1994 by the Škofja Loka organ workshop. The present bell tower, topped with a bulb-shaped Baroque roof and housing three bells, was erected in 1777 and retains conserved traces of its original painted decoration. Inside, visitors find a single nave with the Gothic presbytery at the east end. The 1652 high altar dominates the space, flanked by the 1861 side altars. The 19th-century wall paintings cover most surfaces, while the preserved Gothic fragments remain visible on the north wall. The 1777 bell tower rises beside the church, its Baroque cupola and three bells marking the skyline of the village. The surrounding area is quiet, with the church set among houses and farm buildings typical of the Škofja Loka region.
