Concert for Diana

The Concert for Diana took place at Wembley Stadium in London on 1 July 2007. It marked the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death and would have been her 46th birthday. Prince William and Prince Harry organised the event, inviting many of the world’s most famous singers and performers. Proceeds went to Diana’s charities and those supported by her sons. The concert was broadcast live in 140 countries to an estimated audience of 500 million. The show featured 22 acts over six hours, starting at 4 pm and ending just after 10 pm. Elton John opened with ‘Your Song’ and closed with three more songs. Other performers included Duran Duran, Lily Allen, Tom Jones, Kanye West and Take That. Joss Stone sang with Queen guitarist Brian May, though he later pulled out. A video montage of Diana as a child played at the end, set to Queen’s ‘These Are the Days of Our Lives’. The stadium held 63,000 people who watched from the stands. Speeches were given by Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as celebrities like Dennis Hopper and David Beckham. The concert was watched by 8.9 million in the UK, peaking at 14.8 million viewers. In the US, MTV and VH1 drew 1.4 million viewers over eight hours. Despite some technical delays, the event remains a memorable tribute to Diana’s legacy.
