Ružomberok District

Ružomberok District lies in the Žilina Region of central Slovakia. Until 1918 it belonged to the Liptov county of the Kingdom of Hungary. The district covers an area of 647 square kilometres and has a population of 56,022 people. The landscape is shaped by the Low Tatras and the Greater Fatra mountains. Several rivers flow through the district, including the Váh and its tributaries. The highest point is Veľký Choč at 1,611 metres. The district is known for its cultural and natural heritage. In 2021, 54,624 people identified as Slovak, with smaller groups of Czechs, Romani, Hungarians and others. Roman Catholicism is the largest religious group, followed by those with no religious affiliation. The Evangelical Church also has a significant presence in the area. The district includes 44 municipalities, each with its own character. Visitors find a mix of mountain scenery and historic towns. The Low Tatras National Park offers hiking trails and scenic viewpoints. The Váh valley provides opportunities for cycling and river activities. Historic churches and traditional wooden houses can be seen in villages like Liptovská Teplá and Kalameny. The district’s museums and cultural festivals highlight local traditions and crafts.
