M5 motorway

The M5 is a short dual two-lane spur motorway in north Belfast. It runs for just over two kilometres from the M2 to the A2 Shore Road at Hazelbank in Newtownabbey. Most of the road sits on a causeway across Belfast Lough to avoid Whitehouse beach. The motorway was completed in 1980 after earlier plans for a longer route to Carrickfergus were scaled down. It was the only original motorway scheme in Northern Ireland to go ahead after civil order worsened in the 1970s. The M5’s route was first announced in 1964 and was meant to link to an unbuilt M6 motorway heading to Larne. A transport review in 1969 cut the scheme back to its present length. Even so, planners kept the original line protected from new buildings. The motorway opened on 12 September 1980 and remains a key link between the M2 and the Shore Road. Visitors driving the M5 see the lough on one side and the beach on the other. The causeway keeps traffic moving while protecting the shoreline. The road is a quiet example of how a short motorway can serve a city’s needs. It shows how transport plans can change when wider conditions shift. The M5 remains a practical piece of infrastructure in a busy urban area.
