Cockpool Castle

Cockpool Castle stands on the farm of the same name in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was built in the early 14th century by William de Moravia, who received the land from Thomas Randolph, the first Earl of Moray. The castle belonged to the Murrays of Cockpool for generations. By the mid 15th century it had fallen out of use when Comlongon Castle was built nearby. The site is now marked only by earthworks beside Cockpool Farm. The ruins lie south-west of Comlongon Castle, which replaced it. Visitors can still trace the old foundations among the grassy mounds. The location offers a quiet spot to imagine the castle’s past. The surroundings are peaceful farmland typical of the region. There are no grand walls or towers left to see. The remains are subtle, blending into the landscape rather than standing out. It is a place for those interested in history to walk and reflect.
