RAF Manston History Museum

RAF Manston History Museum stands on the site of the former RAF Manston airfield beside the Kent coast. The airfield’s position near the English Channel made it a key base during the Second World War. In the summer of 1940 it bore the brunt of attacks by the German Luftwaffe. German crews also used it as a convenient point to jettison unused bombs on their way back to bases in northern France. After Dunkerque, bombers of the RAF and the United States Army Air Forces often landed here first when returning from raids over Germany. The museum displays twenty-two aircraft of different types, some as full replicas and others shown only by their cockpits. Among the original exhibits is a Gloster Meteor, the first jet-powered fighter to enter RAF service. Visitors can see how the airfield supported operations throughout the war. The collection includes trainers, transports and fighters that once flew from Manston’s runways. Inside the hangars visitors find engines, instruments and uniforms alongside the aircraft. Outside, the runways and dispersal pans still stretch across the flat land. The site overlooks the sea where returning crews would have seen the white cliffs of Dover. The museum keeps the memory of the airfield’s wartime role alive for new generations.
