Royal Spa Centre

The Royal Spa Centre stands in the heart of Leamington Spa as a modern theatre and cinema complex. Designed by the architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, it opened in 1972 with two distinct spaces: a traditional theatre seating 667 and a smaller cinema for up to 188 people. The building replaced the old spa buildings that once gave the town its name. Its clean, functional lines contrast with the Victorian elegance around it. The centre draws crowds for more than just plays and films. It hosts wrestling, ballet, live music and even the World Powerlifting Championships. Local groups share the stage with national acts, while the cinema screens arthouse and subtitled films that multiplexes avoid. Weekly groups for senior citizens add to the mix, and the National Blood Service runs drop-in sessions. Two bars provide refreshments between performances. Inside, the larger theatre has a traditional stage with tiered seating. The smaller cinema space can switch between film screenings and intimate performances. Outside, the building sits close to Leamington’s restored Regency squares and the Parade shopping street. The contrast between the centre’s modern design and the town’s heritage makes it a distinctive landmark.
