Jura

Jura is a sparsely populated island in the Inner Hebrides, lying northeast of Islay. It is the eighth-largest island in Scotland but has only 258 residents, making it one of the least densely populated. The landscape is dominated by rugged mountains, bare hills and wide stretches of blanket bog. The main village, Craighouse, sits on the east coast by the Sound of Jura. It contains the island’s distillery, a rum distillery, a hotel, a school and a small gallery. George Orwell lived here intermittently between 1946 and 1949, finishing Nineteen Eighty-Four at a remote farmhouse. The island’s wild reputation comes from the Gulf of Corryvreckan, where a powerful whirlpool forms between Jura and Scarba at certain tides. The southern half of Jura is protected as a national scenic area covering more than 30,000 hectares. Three steep-sided quartzite peaks, the Paps of Jura, rise on the western side, their summits visible from the Mull of Kintyre and even Skye on clear days. The highest, Beinn an Òir, reaches 785 metres and is a Corbett. The annual Isle of Jura Fell Race includes all three Paps and four other hills. Beyond Craighouse, small settlements line the east coast northwards, while the west coast remains almost empty except for Feolin Ferry in the southwest. The Paps create dramatic silhouettes over the island, and their quartzite ridges were painted by William McTaggart in 1902. Raised beaches along the west coast show the effects of ancient erosion, and basalt dykes cut through the rock, marking past volcanic activity. The island’s early history includes Mesolithic traces, a Neolithic chambered cairn and the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata, once linked to Columba’s retreat. Viking raids later reshaped power, leading to the Kingdom of the Isles before Scottish control took hold.
