St Leonard's Baptist Church

St Leonard’s Baptist Church stands in St Leonards-on-Sea, a seaside town in East Sussex that grew from an undeveloped valley near Hastings. The church was designed by Thomas Elworthy, a local architect known for late 19th-century designs that blended Renaissance Revival and Classical styles. English Heritage has listed the building at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance. The site was chosen near the railway station, reflecting the town’s rapid growth after the arrival of the railway in 1851. The church was completed in 1883, with additional work by the firm of Stiff and Sons of Lambeth. The church’s façade is ornate, built of red brick with terracotta dressings and a Flemish bond pattern. Three round-arched entrance doors sit below a balustrade supported by foliage-decorated brackets and terracotta columns. The first-floor level features Composite/Corinthian pilasters and an intricately decorated pediment topped by another terracotta urn. Inside, an elaborate wooden gallery is supported on iron columns, and the hall beneath the church serves as the Chapel Park Community Centre. Visitors find a building that reflects the town’s 19th-century expansion and the Baptist community’s growth. The church’s side walls have five arched windows below a terracotta cornice, and the hall extension includes a full-height brick bay with an arched window. The Grade II listing recognises its national importance as part of a group of listed churches in St Leonards-on-Sea.
