Querkogel

The Querkogel is a high alpine peak in the Ötztal Alps of Tirol, standing near the Gurgler Ferner glacier. Its steep walls and sharp ridges mark it as a serious mountaineering challenge, rarely suitable for hikers without climbing experience. The mountain forms part of the Ramolkamm ridge, a north–south crest between the Venter and Gurgler valleys. Three steep faces and three narrow ridges define its shape, making it a classic objective for experienced climbers. The first recorded ascent came in 1887, when Heinrich Hess reached the summit. This was part of the early exploratory period in the Venoste Alps, when Austrian, German and British climbers often relied on local guides. Though not among the most famous peaks, the Querkogel remains a respected testpiece in the range. Routes usually start from huts like the Hochwilde Haus or Ramolhaus, with approaches from Obergurgl or Vent. From the Hochwilde Haus, climbers follow glacier and rock to reach the summit. The Ramolhaus and Langtalereckhütte provide further bases for those tackling the north faces. Views stretch across the Ötztal Alps and down to the valleys below. The surrounding Ramolkamm ridge offers sharp ridges and hanging glaciers for those seeking technical routes.
