Marktkirche hl. Michael, Übelbach
The Marktkirche hl. Michael stands in Übelbach’s Alter Markt district, a small Roman Catholic chapel perched above the site of an old mine. Built in the late 13th century for local miners, it began as a simple rectangular hall before Niklas Röschl expanded it in the mid-15th century. The building still shows its medieval core in thick Romanesque walls and a round-headed window on the south side. Inside, the chapel mixes Romanesque and Baroque styles. The broad nave has a flat, stuccoed ceiling and painted panels from 1722, including an Adoration of the Magi. A wooden Baroque gallery with early-18th-century apostle paintings overlooks the space. The Gothic choir, with its ribbed vault, sits above remains of an earlier church marked by dark floor slabs. The high altar, made around 1770, features statues in the manner of Philipp Jakob Straub and an altar painting of the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. A 1745 organ by Johann Georg Mitterreiter has over 360 pipes and a grey-green marbled case. Outside, a fresco above the door survives beneath later paint.
